In Japan, generally speaking filming permits are difficult to obtain. Especially for projects who want to have the flexibility option of filming once they arrive Japan and see the location for the first time. Therefore, a lot of times for documentaries and small scale shoots, we do it in small crews of 5 max for guerrilla style of filming (such as Shibuya Crossing) and filming without tripod can be done without permit in a lot of exterior locations.

Road Permit: (one that only has 3 - 4 filming members) takes roughly 9 working days (7 working days for authority, and 2 days on the production side) to prep and to process. A producer needs to physically go to the authority to submit paper works, pay and pickup.

Private Property: It is subject to negotiation with the owner. If it is a shop, they usually want you to only be there only 1 hour or 1hr 30 mins, outside of their business hours.

Retail/Brand Shops in High Streets (e.g. NIKE): They often decline any filming that is not related to them and unless their HQ gave the direct permit.

Bullet Train or underground train: No permit is given due to safety reasons and obstructing.
